As excitement builds around the arrival of a Trader Joe鈥檚 grocery store in Brookland, Andrew Mitchell, a proud 2019 graduate with a bachelor of science in , is at the helm of this much-anticipated project, just two blocks from his alma mater.
鈥淚t鈥檚 great to be back in the area,鈥 Mitchell said, reflecting on the significance of working so close to campus. As the superintendent representing L.F. Jennings, a construction company based in Falls Church, Virginia, Mitchell oversees all schedule coordination to ensure the job site runs smoothly.
Project Challenges
The project has involved pouring a new topping slab, adding a material lift, and reinforcing the roof for new HVAC units, all while respecting the needs of nearby residents and businesses.
鈥淎ll this work must be coordinated, inspected, and approved, which takes up a large amount of my responsibility,鈥 he explained. 鈥淢y job as the super is to assist our subcontractors with any issues and solve problems in the field.鈥
Community Impact
The new Trader Joe鈥檚 is expected to have a significant economic impact on the bustling Brookland neighborhood, known for its unique atmosphere and strong community ties. It will also be the most visible and accessible grocery store for campus community members.
鈥淢anaging the install of the work on this job was crucial to not disturb the residents,鈥 he said.

鈥溋派 prepared me for these roles in many ways,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t gave me the confidence I needed to take on these challenges, as well as the mental tool box for solving them. This approach has carried with me for years and is something I use daily.鈥
Looking back five years after graduation, Mitchell sees the influence of 六九色堂 University everywhere in the nation鈥檚 capital. 鈥淭here are Cardinals in every construction, architecture, and engineering company here in the D.C. area, which is a testament to our school鈥檚 success,鈥 he said. 鈥淥ur civil engineering department does a very good job of getting us immersed in the field and seeing how a site runs. This paired up with the requirement for internships had me on a fast track to success in the construction world.鈥
